I often get questions about how I write music or come up with ideas … there’s no short answer to this question … but if I had to try, I guess I would say that it’s always an experiment … take this project for example … currently called ‘Bass Texture’ … I’m not sure where exactly it’s going, but I know the process is going to be fun ! Below, is each and every step of the recording process … from draft to final product with commentary to explain what is going on ! Enjoy the adventure :)

Below is the original draft … there are three parts 1) is a collection of upright basses with a slow ‘stutter’ effect 2) is a drum ‘backbeat’ with glitch and delay all over the place and 3) a ‘dreamy synth’.

Next is what I call the ‘Playground’ Phase … my intern, Marisol, who is producing this song, came up with a few ideas that were recorded and dispersed throughout the song along with a few ‘creativity prompts’ from Brian Eno’s ‘Oblique Strategies’ that I recorded. The idea is that this new layer is to act as inspiration to the musicians who record to the song. This layer may be removed or re-recorded later … we shall see …
