#7 Gerald Veasley

#7 Gerald Veasley

My guest today is bassist Gerald Veasley. Philadelphia Native, Gerald has brought his 6-string bass all over the world performing with Grover Washington Jr., Joe Zawinul, McCoy Tyner, and Odean Pope to name a few. I’ve gotten to know Gerald through his work as president of Jazz Philadelphia, a non-profit seeking to strengthen and elevate the Jazz ecosystem in our city. Although this is a conversation between two bassists, we don’t actually talk about bass that much. Most of the conversation centers around one of my favorite topics, the art of learning, which is a common theme whenever Gerald and I get a chance to speak.

#6 V. Shayne Frederick

#6 V. Shayne Frederick

V. Shayne Frederick is not only one of my favorite vocalists on the Philly Scene, he’s one of my favorite vocalists anywhere. He’s got this old school sensibility that melds with a modernist sense of adventure into a kaleidoscope of Jazz history That is uniquely his, of all the vocalists I’ve heard nobody sounds like V. Shayne. He can really keep musicians and audience members on their toes and hangin on every note. He just released his first album “Lovesome”, which you absolutely have to check out.

#5 Justin Faulkner

#5 Justin Faulkner

Today I sat down in the ever lively Clark Park, home of the Annual Community Unity Festival, with Philadelphia Jazz Icon Justin Faulkner. Brought up in a musical household, extremely gifted, and infinitely motivated he began his professional career at thirteen. Since then he has played with Jazz royalty such as Jimmy Heath, Orrin Evans, Sean Jones, Tim Warfield, Pharoah Sanders, Terence Blanchard, Jacky Terrasson, Christian McBride, and perhaps best known as drummer for the Branford Marsalis Quartet.

We had a great conversation about a variety of topics including: the origins of The Community Unity Festival, fashion, his acting debut in the film “Bolden”, the joy of listening, coming up in Branford’s band, advice for students and much more.

I hope to see you all at this year’s Community Unity Festival on August 3rd at Clark Park in West Philadelphia. It’s always a blast, supports a great cause, and it’s free.
